“Keys to the Moon<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

I opened an email today,
\na part of my past with a few
\nphotos that shined,
\na first of its kind,
\nmemories on ice thawed
\nas her cocoa brown eyes
\ntuned my heart into songs
\nI hadn’t heard since
\nFerris Buehler’s Day Off,
\nMandela still slept in a cell,
\nWall Street had no ceiling,
\nReagan & Rocky fought the Russians,
\ncomputers were still for nerds,
\nbills were a grown-up myth
\n& MTV only played music videos.<\/p>\n

Back when our pack
\nkept chaos in our pockets,
\n& chased everything we couldn’t catch;
\nlaughs fueled our upside down nights,
\nPepe Lopez style
\nspot to spot, party to party,
\nbeaches & clubs &
\ngettin’ laid or passin’ out
\non someone else’s lawn
\nnone of it mattered
\nbecause we were full of lava
\nwith keys to the Moon;
\nTime never needed a clock
\nevery day was the middle of June
\n& the whole world was
\nfive minutes from last call…<\/p>\n

I leaned back &
\nglanced around my office,
\nadrift on a slow Merry-Go-Round
\nrecounting dreams
\nthe world had sold long ago:
\nlaughter & tears,
\ncareers & pallbearers,
\nex-girlfriends & near misses,
\ngarterbelt catches at weddings,
\nwhere I woke up one day an Uncle,
\ninherited my grandpa’s gut
\n& a few gray hairs —
\nhaunted by echoes
\nmost only hear
\na few lifetimes later.<\/p>\n

Her email opened a lens,
\na missing link to happy times
\n& forgotten sins
\nI pondered if Love for a friend
\noverruled what-ifs & old Lusts
\nbest left unsaid.<\/p>\n

Either way,
\nI clicked reply
\nthankful she was in my life
\nagain.<\/p>\n
