Senior Graphic Designer and Webmaster (07/2004 to present)
Self-Employed. Installed, administered, and maintained PCs (Windows XP, 2003 Advanced Server and Vista) and Linux systems (desktops and LAMP servers). Troubleshoot operating systems (Windows workstations), software, hardware and other problems.

  • Designed all print, web, and mixed media graphics for BGP clients, including brand identity packages. Occasional copywriting, too.
  • Installed, tested, and hardened Windows and Linux web servers (WAMP and LAMP)
  • Set up cron jobs to handle routine Linux server maintenance (backing up web server logs, clearing out tmp files, etc).

IT Consultant (2006 to Present)
I began providing IT on-call services for small businesses that couldn’t afford to hire full or part-time IT staff. These services included:

  • Data recovery and removing viruses, Trojans and spyware from deeply infected computers and networks.
  • Providing PC, network and email support (occasionally Mac).
  • Helping clients to find news ways to use inhouse technology to cut overhead costs and save money.
  • Installing secure wireless routers on established Windows-based LAN networks.
  • Setting up email server-level spam filters (Spamassassin, Bogofilter).
  • Integrating mobile devices into small business networks.
  • Documenting network environments for easy troubleshooting and expansion.

Atlantic Video / ESPN
IT Consultant (08/2005 to 02/2006)
One of the mid-Atlantic’s premeire television production companies, AV is best known for producing several ESPN shows onsite. Their company experienced rapid growth during the late 90s and early 00s but their network infrastructure remained relatively neglected and insecure.

  • Performed network assessment for their Washington DC headquarters.
  • Performed network vulnerability tests.
  • Mapped out and documented their network infrastructure.
  • Developed plans and cost analysis for several mixed network upgrade options.
  • Found and removed worm-infested print server devices.
  • Implemented a Veritas-based SQL Server backup solution.

 

WAVE project for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs
System Analyst and Web Designer (06/1998 to 05/1999)
Working as a subcontractor for PROSOFT, Inc., I performed the following services that were used to create WAVE, the web-based method for U.S. military veterans to certify their G.I. Bill for school.

  • Performed the research for the Business Case rules used to write the spec used in the proposal.
  • Wrote the technical spec of the proposal used by PROSOFT, Inc. to win the contract.
  • Interviewed and picked the programmers and database developer for the project.
  • Configured and set up the Compaq Proliant servers that housed the system.
  • Installed Microsoft SQL Server and defined the database tables later expanded upon by the database developer and programmer.
  • Supervised the installation at the VBA NOC in Philadelphia.
  • Created the logo brand for the system (and it is still in use today).
